Guidelines shown below are for Included Angles (α).

A 6" smooth cut machinist’s hand file is useful to carry with you. Use it with a draw filing approach to resharpen the shovel as needed throughout the tool's usage for the day.

If this tool is used for landscaping, the directions below for tool maintenance are especially important to ensure the longest tool life.

General Guidelines
Type	α	Sharp ness	Notes
Shovel End	40°	3	Shovel end Be sure to sharpen the top / convex side of the shovel (the factory bevel should already be there).
Pick End	35°		Pick end This could be up to 40°, depending on the soil in the area (e.g., particularly if it is quite rocky). Sharpen the upper edge (as shown in the picture in the right; the factory bevel should already be there).
