Guidelines shown below are for Included Angles (α).

A 6" smooth cut machinist’s hand file is useful to carry with you. Use it with a draw filing approach to resharpen the shovel as needed throughout the tool's usage for the day.

Be sure to sharpen the top / convex side of the shovel (the factory bevel should already be there).

Pick End 35°

This could be up to 40°, depending on the soil in the area (e.g., particularly if it is quite rocky).

Sharpen the upper edge (as shown in the picture in the right; the factory bevel should already be there).
